The mayor of my little suburb is making waves today via social media. First he got on Facebook and made an oblique, vague statement about an environmental scandal brewing in Macomb County, implying that it “could be a mini version of what happened in Flint.” Later today, also on Facebook, he backpedaled a little, saying it had nothing to do with water and Warren’s residents were safe. But he still was not giving details about the scandal.
Finally this evening, the mayor got specific, alleging on the local all-news radio station that an excavation firm dumped between 100,000 and 200,000 yards of possibly contaminated soil and other material at Freedom Hill county park in Sterling Heights, which is north of Warren. He doesn’t say when this dumping occurred. He does say there are some monitoring wells now indicating higher levels of contaminants. He also does not say how he knows this, nor does he say why he’s going about this issue in this way.
The county executive and other officials say the mayor’s statements are untrue and unfounded. They claim to have been trying to get in touch with him all day, but he’s not returning the executive’s phone calls.
Every once in a while, Hizzoner is given to flights of political fancy. Who knows what he’s really up to.
