Arvo Pärt: Berliner Messe

My commute to work this morning was graced by radio station WRCJ playing a recording of this work. I’m not religious, and I don’t know Latin, but the sounds of the Berliner Messe are enriching and uplifting. I find most of Pärt’s work to be like that. There’s not enough of it in my life.

Keeping to music, the weekend’s highlight will be a visit to the Detroit Symphony to hear them perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. I am behind on my homework; I’ve meant to listen to both but have not, so it’s probably too late for that unless I find them on YouTube today. Beethoven I’m not concerned about, but Das Lied is more complicated and has lyrics. I just find I enjoy the concert better if I know at least a little about the works being played if I can. But I’m sure I’ll enjoy it anyway.

Look, Ma — No politics!

About songdogmi

I'm a longhaired almost-hippie stuck in the inner suburbs of a major rust-belt metropolis who's thoughtful, creative, and kind of geeky. In exchange for a paycheck I run around in a cubicle maze most days. When I escape, I play music, hang out in coffee houses, dink around on the computer, take naps, and think I should be off in the woods somewhere. Every once in a while I get in my car and drive far, far away, though I've always come back so far.
