Making things up from scratch

Well, I think I got the orphans all packed up and onto a train. Perhaps somewhere out west they’ll find good homes.

Seriously, though, thanks for any kind words and thoughts on my annual indulgence in fancy. I use Lewis Carroll’s birthday not only as a chance to indulge in sort of a meme but also to take a stab at fiction, even speculative fiction. There has long been an itch in the back of my mind to try more fiction writing. I mean, back to my early teens, that long. For a lot of reasons, though, I haven’t really managed much that’s in a presentable form. It’s not that I don’t create in other ways, but it always seemed fiction would be the ideal. And yet, I don’t read a lot, and I can barely conceive of crafting something even novella-length. Well, don’t let me beat myself up over it here. Anyway, it’s fun to attempt fiction, especially if it turns out pretty much the way I wanted it to.

About songdogmi

I'm a longhaired almost-hippie stuck in the inner suburbs of a major rust-belt metropolis who's thoughtful, creative, and kind of geeky. In exchange for a paycheck I run around in a cubicle maze most days. When I escape, I play music, hang out in coffee houses, dink around on the computer, take naps, and think I should be off in the woods somewhere. Every once in a while I get in my car and drive far, far away, though I've always come back so far.

Writing fiction is fun, but it’s hard work, too!

You have to create an entire world-and have it seem real to the reader-as well as to yourself.
