Another longtime friend from my early days at the Four Green Fields open mic passed away over the weekend. Bill McGettigan was a fine Celtic and blues musician. He may have been best known as the co-creator (with his wife) of Krystal’s Motor Town Cafe, a long-running variety show running on local cable access channels. Shows featured a musical guest, or sometimes a spoken-word performer, along with skits. Many clips from the show are on YouTube. Bill’s character usually sported a welder’s mask, except when he was actually the musical guest: “The Galway Races”, “The Sick Note”, and his own Dr. Sullivan’s Snake Juice (that’s Krystal herself in the background). The YouTube page also has a few videos shot at venues where Bill played solo or with friends. The song that was the intro to the show is “Krystal’s Motor Town Cafe” on ReverbNation; it’s quite a hoot.
I'm a longhaired almost-hippie stuck in the inner suburbs of a major rust-belt metropolis who's thoughtful, creative, and kind of geeky. In exchange for a paycheck I run around in a cubicle maze most days. When I escape, I play music, hang out in coffee houses, dink around on the computer, take naps, and think I should be off in the woods somewhere. Every once in a while I get in my car and drive far, far away, though I've always come back so far.
