Researchers: Excavation of Shipwreck Is Warranted — The ship in question is The Griffin, or Le Griffon, the first large ship on the Great Lakes. It mysteriously sank in 1679 with a load of furs. Even the location of its wreck has been undetermined until, perhaps, now. Recently, France claimed ownership if it is indeed Le Griffon, but the ship would remain in the Great Lakes region if raised.
The Griffin was my favorite part of historical record outlined in my eighth-grade Michigan history course, so the possibility it may actually have been found is pretty dang cool.
