It’s a laid-back Sunday. I’m listening to the first Iron and Wine album, The Creek Drank the Cradle, via the website while trying to catch up on Facebook and such. Last night I heard more new-to-me Iron & Wine (Our Endless Numbered Days and Woman King) and enjoyed the understated production of the former, and how much the latter foreshadowed The Shepherd’s Dog which has been one of my favorites for a few years. I love when musicians take instruments like banjos and slide guitars and make them work for non-country songs. I have to admit that I don’t really get a good fix on the lyrics and their meanings, yet; I probably need to sit with the lyrics in my hand sometime.
Along the way, last night I got some ideas about my own upcoming projects while listening to I&W. What they did with those albums sounds pretty feasible for me, which is not a knock at all on I&W at all. Not that the next CD is going to sound anything like an Iron & Wine release, but maybe it at least makes recording seem less daunting.
