Overtreatment of back pain?

The next time someone says “You need to see a doctor for your back! I don’t know why you’re not having back surgery!” like my entire family was yelling at me on Saturday, I’ll have them read this: Overtreated: Time may best treatment for back pain. According to the article, surgeries are often not the best choice. Time, exercise, and management of pain may well be better for a lot of people. I’m not saying I’m doing good exercise and management, but that’s no reason for me to rush off to a surgeon.

It’s a relatively long article (for this source) and has links to actual studies.

Sorry… Saturday kinda struck a nerve with me, so to speak.

About songdogmi

I'm a longhaired almost-hippie stuck in the inner suburbs of a major rust-belt metropolis who's thoughtful, creative, and kind of geeky. In exchange for a paycheck I run around in a cubicle maze most days. When I escape, I play music, hang out in coffee houses, dink around on the computer, take naps, and think I should be off in the woods somewhere. Every once in a while I get in my car and drive far, far away, though I've always come back so far.

Yeah, you were writing about your back yesterday, so you know… It’s been rough this time because everyone looks at me and gets so concerned and that’s no help to my psyche (it’s bad enough what the pain does)… but that only means maybe I should do something, not let someone cut on me.

The article says it’s not even the best protocol to take X-rays or MRIs in the first month to six weeks.
