In case anyone is getting their Detroit-area news from me alone, here’s a follow-up from Tuesday’s election: we passed the “zoo tax” by overwhelming margins in all three counties of the immediate metro area. This will give the Detroit Zoo $15 million for the annual budget (the rest of the budget comes from zoo admissions and gifts). The average homeowner (defined as owning a $200,000 home) will pay about $10 per year more. (See Detroit Free Press article from Aug. 6, 2008.)
We all should be glad it passed. The thought of a red panda on the corner of Main and Fourth Streets in downtown Royal Oak with a tin cup, looking sadly up at passers-by and hoping for a handout, was hard to take.
